A Lohri party at a farmhouse in Delhi NCR gives you what a banquet hall or a crowded rooftop cannot: an open lawn for the fire, room for the whole family to dance, and a private evening that belongs to you. That matters most for a first Lohri, when a family is celebrating a new baby or a newly married couple and wants every relative there. This guide covers the 2027 dates, how families host a first Lohri, what this winter's air-quality rules mean for the bonfire, costs by guest count, the menu, a run-of-show and a checklist.
Quick answer
Lohri falls on Wednesday, 13 January 2027. For a Lohri party at a farmhouse in Delhi NCR, most families book the weekend before (9–10 January), keep the fire and dhol to about 7–10 PM, and confirm in writing whether a wood bonfire is allowed under GRAP. Book 4–6 weeks ahead, and keep a gas fire pit as a backup.

When Is Lohri 2027, and Which Date Should You Book?
Lohri is on Wednesday, 13 January 2027, the eve of Makar Sankranti, which falls on Thursday, 14 January (date per Astrosight's Lohri 2027 page). Because the festival lands midweek, the date you book depends on who is coming and how far they travel.
- Saturday 9 January 2027: the most popular choice for a large first Lohri. Guests can stay late, outstation relatives can drive in, and an overnight stay is easy. Expect the highest rents and the fastest bookings.
- Sunday 10 January 2027: a good second option, often a little cheaper. Wind down earlier, since most guests have work the next day.
- Wednesday 13 January 2027 (Lohri night): best for families who want the fire on the actual date, and for smaller groups of 20–40. Weekday rents are usually lower.
- Saturday 16 January 2027: a fallback if the earlier weekend is booked out, though some families prefer to celebrate before the festival rather than after.
January nights in Delhi NCR are cold and often foggy, which affects late drives home from Sohna Road, Greater Noida or Faridabad. A farmhouse with rooms lets close family stay the night. Our guide to day-use vs overnight farmhouse bookings explains how the two are priced.
What Is a First Lohri, and How Do Families Celebrate It?
A first Lohri is the first Lohri after a baby is born or after a couple marries, and many Punjabi families treat it as one of the biggest family celebrations of the year. Customs vary from family to family, but most first-Lohri evenings share the same core moments.
- The fire and the parikrama: the baby's parents, or the newlywed couple, walk around the fire and offer til, gur, rewri, popcorn and peanuts into it, often with grandparents leading.
- Blessings and gifts: elders bless the baby or the couple. The new bride often receives clothes and jewellery from her in-laws, and the baby receives new clothes, toys or silver.
- Folk songs and dance: traditional Lohri songs, including the story of Dulla Bhatti, followed by dhol, bhangra and giddha.
- Sharing the sweets: boxes or potlis of rewri, gajak, peanuts and popcorn are handed out to guests as they leave.
- Dinner: a Punjabi winter menu, usually with sarson da saag and makki di roti at its centre.
Planning Tips for a Baby's First Lohri
- Keep the baby well back from the fire and the smoke; one parent can do the parikrama while the other holds the baby at a safe distance.
- Ask for a warm, quiet indoor room close to the lawn where the baby can nap and be fed, away from the dhol and speakers.
- Schedule the fire ritual early, around 7 PM, while the baby is still awake and before the coldest part of the night.
- Keep the guest list realistic. A crowd of 200 around one fire is hard to manage with an infant; two or three fire points work better.
Planning Tips for a Newlyweds' First Lohri
- Many couples married in the November–December 2026 season will celebrate their first Lohri in January, so book early: you are competing with other first-Lohri families for the same weekend.
- Plan a short photo moment for the couple at the fire, with enough light for the photographer.
- If both families are attending, set aside time for the gift exchange before dinner so it does not get lost in the dancing.
Is a Lohri Bonfire Allowed at a Farmhouse in Delhi NCR?
There is no blanket yes. It depends on the air-quality rules in force in January and on the farmhouse's own policy. The Commission for Air Quality Management invoked GRAP Stage I across the NCR on 21 October 2026 as Delhi's air turned "poor" ( News on AIR), and GRAP usually stays in place through January. From Stage I, agencies are told to strictly enforce the ban on open burning of biomass and waste (see Outlook's summary of GRAP Stage I). Firewood is biomass, so a large wood bonfire can fall within that ban, especially at higher GRAP stages.
- Never burn leaves, garbage, plastic or décor waste. In December 2025 the Delhi government ordered an on-the-spot ₹5,000 fine for burning leaves, garbage, plastic or rubber in the open (The Tribune).
- Keep the ritual fire small. The parikrama and offerings need a modest, contained fire, not a tall pile of logs. A raised metal fire bowl is easier to control and leaves less ash.
- Plan a gas fire pit backup. If the venue or the GRAP stage rules out wood on your date, a gas fire pit still lets the family gather and make the offerings.
- Check the caterer's fuel. In December 2025 the Delhi Pollution Control Committee directed hotels, restaurants and open eateries to move tandoors to electric, gas or other clean fuels (The Week / PTI). Ask for gas or electric tandoors and barbecues.
- Check the GRAP stage in the week of the party. Our guide to GRAP rules for weddings and parties explains what each stage means for generators, tandoors and guest cars.

Which Lohri Party Format Suits Your Guest Count?
Match the farmhouse to the size of the party. A lawn that feels cosy for 30 people around one fire will feel empty, and a small villa will feel cramped and unsafe with 150 people near a fire.
| Format | Guests | What to look for |
|---|---|---|
| Friends' Lohri night | 15–40 | Villa or small farmhouse with a fire area, indoor lounge and rooms for an overnight stay |
| Close-family dinner | 30–60 | Lawn with one central fire, covered dining area, easy access for elderly guests |
| First Lohri (baby or newlyweds) | 75–200 | Large lawn with two or three fire points, stage or dance floor, indoor room for the baby or bride, ample parking |
| Lohri with a kitty or society group | 20–50 | Weekday evening slot, shared fire, snacks-led menu, games (see our kitty party farmhouse guide) |
For a large first Lohri, Chattarpur, Bijwasan and Gurgaon have many big lawns close to most of Delhi and Gurgaon. Sohna Road and Manesar suit an overnight family stay in a villa. Noida, Greater Noida and Ghaziabad work best when most relatives live in east Delhi or across the Yamuna.
How Much Does a Lohri Party at a Farmhouse Cost?
As a rough estimate, a Lohri evening for 30–40 guests at a Delhi NCR farmhouse often costs around ₹70,000–₹1,80,000, and a first Lohri for 100–150 guests around ₹2,50,000–₹5,50,000. The figures below are indicative ranges only; real quotes vary widely by area, date, property and caterer.
| Item | 30–40 guests (estimate) | 100–150 guests (estimate) |
|---|---|---|
| Farmhouse rent | ₹25,000–₹70,000 | ₹75,000–₹2,00,000 |
| Food (Punjabi winter buffet + live counter) | ₹30,000–₹65,000 | ₹1,10,000–₹2,25,000 |
| Fire setup, heaters and fuel | ₹3,000–₹10,000 | ₹10,000–₹30,000 |
| Décor (marigolds, kites, phulkari drapes, lights) | ₹8,000–₹20,000 | ₹30,000–₹75,000 |
| Dhol and DJ | ₹5,000–₹15,000 | ₹20,000–₹50,000 |
Not included: alcohol and any liquor licence, return gifts and sweet boxes, photography, and an overnight stay. In Delhi, serving liquor at a party on private premises generally needs a P-10 occasional licence; Haryana and Uttar Pradesh run their own permits. Ways to save: choose Sunday 10 January or the Lohri night itself instead of Saturday, ask whether heaters and a fire bowl are included in the rent, and buy rewri, gajak and peanuts in bulk from a local market rather than through the caterer.
What Food and Music Work Best at a Lohri Party?
Keep the menu Punjabi, warm and served hot, and keep the music loud only while it is allowed. A simple plan:
- At the fire: rewri, gajak, til ladoo, chikki, popcorn, roasted peanuts and gur for the offerings and for guests to snack on.
- Welcome: masala chai, hot soup or kahwa as guests arrive in the cold.
- Live counter: paneer and chicken tikka, roasted corn or aloo tikki, cooked on gas or electric equipment.
- Main course: sarson da saag with makki di roti and white butter, dal makhani, a paneer dish, a chicken or mutton curry and tandoori rotis.
- Dessert: gajar halwa, hot jalebi with rabri, pinni or kheer.
For portions and per-plate estimates, see our farmhouse party catering guide. For music, a dhol player for the fire and bhangra is the heart of a Lohri evening, and a DJ can take over for dinner. Under India's noise rules, outdoor loudspeakers generally have to stop by 10 PM, so schedule the loud part between about 7 and 10 PM. Our guide to choosing a DJ or live band for a farmhouse party compares the options.

What Should You Confirm Before Booking a Farmhouse for Lohri?
Confirm these points in writing before you pay the advance. Most Lohri-night problems come from assumptions about the fire, music timings and how many people the lawn can hold. Our full list of farmhouse rules to check before booking covers the general terms.
- Is a wood fire allowed, where, how big, and who supplies the wood?
- Is a gas fire pit or fire bowl available if wood is not allowed on the date?
- How many patio heaters are included, and what do extras cost?
- Is there a warm indoor room for the baby, the bride or elderly guests?
- What is the outdoor music cut-off, and is dhol allowed?
- Can you bring your own caterer, decorator and dhol player?
- What is the alcohol policy, and who arranges the licence?
- Power backup, parking and driveway lighting in fog.
- Fire extinguisher, sand and water kept near the fire area.
6-Week Lohri Party Checklist
- 6 weeks before (late November): fix the date and guest count; shortlist farmhouses; ask about fire, heaters and music rules.
- 5 weeks before: pay the advance once terms are in writing; book the caterer, dhol player and DJ.
